‘Ay up me duck’: suffragettes from Derby, Derbyshire and the North

Derbyshire flowers‘Suffragette’ was one of the blockbuster films of 2015 winning awards for its account of the campaign for ‘votes for women’. However the film presented Emmeline Pankhurst as leader of a movement based in London. Thousands of women (and men) contributed from the mill and factory towns of the North including Derbyshire and Derby. We will look at the local perspective: suffragists Alice Wheeldon and Hannah Mitchell, ‘clues’ from Shipley, Breadsall and Heanor, as well as complete our own research, and publish our findings online.
